Working with Outlook

Rules may become incompatible after installing Outlook

Outlook includes the following new rule types:

If you create new rules using these new rule types in Outlook 2003, your rules may not work correctly if you use Microsoft Outlook 2002 Service Pack 1 or earlier for that e-mail account. To avoid having your rules become incompatible, follow these steps:

Add-ins that previously worked with Outlook may now cause you to be prompted to allow access to Outlook data

Outlook has increased security around the Outlook Object Model, which many third-party software companies use to integrate their product with Outlook. These new security enhancements may now cause you to be prompted to allow the programs access to your Outlook data.

In some cases, the third-party software companies may provide updated versions of their software that will not cause you to be prompted for access to your Outlook data. For technical information regarding this change, see the Outlook Object Model section later in this file and the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Web article titled Important Security Notes for Microsoft Outlook COM Add-In Developers.

ActiveX controls will not load in one-off forms

When Outlook receives a message containing a form definition, the item is considered to be a one-off form. To help prevent unwanted script and controls from running in one-off forms, Outlook will not load ActiveX controls in one-off forms by default. This behavior can be controlled by administrators using one of the following registry settings:

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security

AllowActiveXOneOffForms (DWORD)

not present - Only load controls that are listed below. (default)
0 - Only load controls that are listed below.
1 - Allow only safe controls.
2 - Allow all ActiveX controls.

The following controls can be used in one-off forms:

Using Outlook 2003 and then using any Collaboration Data Objects Library (CDO) 1.2x application may cause Microsoft Exchange Server to stop working

If you use Outlook 2003 and then use any Collaboration Data Objects Library (CDO) 1.2x application, such as Microsoft Outlook Web Access for Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, Exchange Server may stop working if you have not previously installed the hotfix mentioned in the applicable Knowledge Base (KB) article below.

Note  Versions of Outlook Web Access for Exchange Server later than Exchange Server 5.5 are not affected because the later versions do not use CDO. However, other CDO-enabled applications are affected unless the hotfix has been installed for the version of Exchange Server that you are using.

For more information about this issue, see the KB article applicable to the version of Exchange Server that you are using on Microsoft Office Product Support for Office Users.

Exchange Server 2003 SP1    #823343 CDO Heap Corruption When You Try to Access an Exchange Mailbox

Exchange Server 2000    #824960 CDO Heap Corruption When You Try to Access an Exchange Mailbox

Exchange Server 5.5    #818709 Outlook Web Access Stops Responding When You Try to Access an Exchange Mailbox

Outlook Object Model

Additional properties blocked in object model: Outlook Object Model Guard

In addition to inheriting the Outlook 2002 Object Model Guard behavior, Outlook 2003 blocks code that attempts to access certain properties of the Outlook object model for security reasons. These additional blocks may cause programs that worked with previous versions of Outlook to encounter security blocks. The additional properties that have been blocked in Outlook 2003 are:

Working with Meeting Workspaces

Considerations when linking Outlook meeting requests to Meeting Workspaces

Nonrecurring meetings
More than one nonrecurring meeting request can link to the same Meeting Workspace if the workspace has not previously been linked to a recurring meeting series.

Recurring meetings

Using delegates
To permit an Outlook delegate to create a Meeting Workspace for you, the delegate must first have permissions on the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site where the Meeting Workspace will be created.

SharePoint Alerts

View SharePoint alerts on Internet sites in the Rules and Alerts dialog box

To receive Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services alerts in Outlook, you need to add the SharePoint server’s address to the registry in the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/11.0/Common/Security/Trusted Alert Sources "siteurl" (REG_SZ) = 1

Where the "siteurl" string would be "www.fourthcoffee.com" if the SharePoint site was http://www.fourthcoffee.com.

View Windows SharePoint Services alerts in the Rules and Alerts dialog box

If you open the Rules and Alerts dialog box when using Microsoft Windows Server 2003 as your operating system, alerts that were previously created on intranet Web sites will not be displayed in the Alerts list. Any new alert sources that have not been verified will be permanently deleted from the Alert Source list. To work around this problem, add the SharePoint sites to the list of intranet sites or trusted sites in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
